The Journal

Notes from the Workshop

Herbal how-tos, seasonal remedies, ingredient spotlights, and quiet moments from the workshop — written as the herbs inspire.

This is where the apothecary opens its notebooks. Expect herbal how-tos, kitchen recipes, ingredient spotlights on the botanicals we love — calendula, elderberry, and friends — and honest notes from the workbench where every batch is made.

Preparing for Winter

As the leaves start to turn to shades of yellow and fall, you can feel and smell the seasons changing. Fall is a beautiful time of year, a reminder that all things need to let go & transform for a new season. As a parent, the cool mornings and short days bring worries of what sickness will be coming home with our kids. Here are a few things we do to try to stay healthy & keep sicknesses short when they do sneak in.

1) Eat healthy — this sounds like an obvious one, but it's so easy to get caught up in the rush of the day and grab foods that aren't really nourishing our bodies. Make it a point to eat dark leafy greens; soups made with bone broth are always soup-er soothing when colds do strike. Think REAL foods, not heavily processed — recipes you have to cut up & put together help to make sure we know what we're putting into our bodies.

2) Be prepared with your favorite cold remedies. For us that's our Sunday Brew Tea — the kids always request it when they start to feel run down. It has soothing lemon balm, peppermint to help with chest congestion & headaches, nettles which hold a lot of minerals, and rose hips which are loaded with vitamin C.

The past few years we've also reached for a lot of homeopathic remedies. Boiron's Oscillococcinum is definitely our go-to at the first sign of feeling off — it has nipped many colds and flus in the butt before they have a chance to set in.

3) Tinctures are another option. I may have a slight obsession with tincturing all the plants I find useful around our property. There are so many "weeds" that have a long list of health benefits, though — so why not use them?

I'd love to hear your favorite things to keep on hand for cold and flu season. Feel free to email me!
